About Us

'Denby Dale Travellers' was established in the early 1980’s. It all started with a group of friends meeting for a run around the village and then chatting about their exploits over a swift half or two. Word of these exploits gradually spread and after a while the running club was born. Now renamed Denby Dale Athletics Club, we have around 100 senior members aged 16 and above and a Junior Section for those aged 8 to 16. For details of the Junior Section and how to join, see the dedicated page on this website.

Senior section

Our Senior Section caters for runners of all abilities, ranging from beginners to marathon & ultra runners on road, trail and fells. Whether you want to run competitively or simply to keep fit, there’s something for everyone.

Previously based at the Pie Hall in Denby Dale, the Senior Section now meets at The George Inn in Upper Denby (HD8 8UE) on Tuesday evenings at 7pm. We don’t have any changing facilities, so it’s best to arrive ready to run. Club runs range from 4-5 miles at a steady jogging pace to 8 miles or sometimes more, at a brisk training pace. When daylight permits, our runs are normally off-road, using the many footpaths and rights of way in the area. What a great way to see the countryside! Afterwards we enjoy a friendly post-run drink at the pub.

Some members also meet up on Thursday evenings for more structured training and at weekends for longer runs - details are shared via club social media.

For those that want to run competitively, Senior Section members take part in road races, trail races, fell running and cross-country. We also take part in team events such as the Barnsley Boundary Way relay, the Calderdale Way relay, the West Yorkshire Cross Country league and the Yorkshire veterans cross country. The Club is affiliated to England Athletics and Northern Athletics.

If you are aged 16 or above and would like to join us for a run without obligation, we would be very pleased to see you.
